SCIENCE DRAMA CONTEST 2010

Regional Science City (National Council of Science Museums) is pleased to announce the programme- SCIENCE DRAMA FESTIVAL- in the series of educational activities it conducts throughout the year. You might be aware that the Council is an autonomous organization working under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India and is responsible for spreading scientific temper throughout the country amongst the masses and children in particular.

For achieving this goal the Council has set up science museums/centres in different parts of the country and organizes a number of educational activities for school children. Organization of Science Drama Festival throughout the country is a totally new concept and with the involvement of the school students, all over the country it has become a popular annual event.

SCIENCE DRAMA

This programme is organized to encourage the students, teachers and other science communicators to explore and experiment with the dramatic form as a means of communication. Theatre or drama is an age-old cultural form of our society, which has been used through the ages for entertainment, recreation and also as a medium of social interaction (i.e., to put across the social message). In other words, influencing the thinking of the society in an indirect way, thus bringing a social change. By understanding the effectiveness of this medium and also to involve more youngsters to participate.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE ?

The competition is open to the high school students up to 10th standard.

THEME / TOPIC OF THE DRAMA

Plot of the play should be on one of the following topic:
  1. Science for Society
  2. Life and Works of Scientists
  3. Exploring Moon
  4. Space & Astronomy
  5. Climate Change & Evolution
However, it should convey a definite scientific message.

WHILE WRITING THE SCRIPT THE FOLLOWING POINTS SHOULD BE KEPT IN MIND
  1. The drama should not be an academic exercise and boring. It should give emotional and aesthetic experience to the performers and also to the audience.
  2. It should engage the audience and give educational message. The performers and the audience should enjoy and learn simultaneously.
  3. While writing the play, care should be taken with regard to the settings, duration of the play and also the number of artists taking part in the drama.

OTHER INFORMATION FOR THE PARTICIPANTS TAKING PART IN THE DRAMA FESTIVAL
  1. The duration of the play should not be more than 30 minutes.
  2. There should not be more than 8 characters in the play.
  3. It should convey scientific message
  4. The drama team should be able to set up (maximum 5 minutes) for stage the play quickly
  5. The language should be easy to follow (more of visuals preferred).
  6. The play can be in English/Hindi.
  7. The play can have costumes, dance, music, mime and also models to enhance the quality and credibility of the play.
  8. Written poster / banner / Audio visual aids can be used as illustration.
  9. The participating school has to submit an authentic Hindi/ English translation of the script.

JUDGEMENT CRITERIA (for 100 marks)

a. Scientific content in the play 30
b. Presentation of the play 50
c. Effectiveness of the play 20

SCRIPTS

In order to get the drama scripts on the themes it is suggested that the School authorities may take the following steps:

(a.) A workshop for the teachers may be organized at the School level, giving them an idea about writing a script, and also suggesting to them, sources from where relevant information for writing the scrip can be collected.

(b.) A Script writing competition may be conducted in order to get more number of scripts. The competition would also help others, apart from teachers in involving themselves.
